  • Kangaroo for Christmas

    James Flora

Hardcover (Enchanted Lion Books, Sept. 20, 2011)
The day before Christmas, Kathryn's present from Uncle Dingo arrives in a big box. Naturally, it's a lively kangaroo. Kathryn can't wait to show grandma, so she hops onto Adelaide's back and off they go!But getting to Grandma's proves more difficult than expected. Honking horns and screeching breaks frighten Adelaide into taking off on her own. In good Flora fashion, chaos and pure silliness ensue. When Kathryn and Adelaide finally arrive at Grandma's house, a very cool and collected Grandma sees there's nothing to be done but to get them home as swiftly as possible.A rumpus of a read, Kangaroo for Christmas is a merry Christmas tall tale full of witty illustrations that are sure to draw laughs and hoots of pleasure.James Flora (1914–1998) was a famous commercial artist from the 1940s through the 1980s. James Flora

Hardcover (Feral House, Dec. 4, 2018)
When Grandpa was a boy, the most terrible thing happened to him the day before Christmas. While taking a shortcut through the woods, he met three fearsome witches. One, with sharp teeth and hair like an unmowed lawn, pointed her finger at him, squealed, "Sha-zam!" and turned him into a snake. The second witch, who didn't have any feet, turned him into a turkey buzzard. And the third-tall and warty-screamed, "Ta-pooty!" and changed him into a pig. Home he ran, but his parents wouldn't let him in.James Flora's tall tales―among them Grandpa's Ghost Stories rereleased by Feral House in 2017―with his ingenious illustrations, are favorites with children and adults alike. His many fans will be delighted with Grandpa's next adventures.

  • The Day the Cow Sneezed

    James Flora

Hardcover (Enchanted Lion Books, Oct. 12, 2010)
"I bet your cow never sneezed a hole in the schoolhouse wall. Our cow did!" Thus begins one of the funniest, fastest-paced, tallest-tale stories ever told! The fun mounts as absurdity cascades on absurdity, until at the very end one small boy learns that a "teeny-weeny error can grow into a whopping big mistake almost before you can say Ka-Chow!"With brilliantly colored, bold and original pictures and a sure use of words that sweep the reader along, James Flora has created a hilariously wise picture book that will bring delighted laughter to the young of any age!James ("Jim") Flora worked as a commercial artist from the 1940s through the 1980s. He enjoyed a lengthy career, was a lifelong fan of jazz and classical music, and was renowned for creating wild illustrations for Columbia and RCA Victor records in the 1940s and '50s. He also created seventeen books for young readers. The Day the Cow Sneezed, his second book, was first published in 1957. Despite long-standing interest, this is the first time the book has been reprinted. Flora was born in the small town of Bellefontaine, Ohio, in 1914. He attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he met his future wife, artist Jane Sinnicksen. The Floras moved to Connecticut in 1942 when Jim accepted a job at Columbia Records. Flora and Jane went on to have five children. It was after their first child was born that Flora started to create children's books. Flora passed away at his home in Rowayton, Connecticut, in 1998.
